How to Bracket for Real Estate Interiors

Every interior photograph asks the camera to do something it cannot: hold a bright window and a shadowed corner in the same frame. Bracketing is the answer — several exposures of the same composition, merged later into one image that holds detail everywhere.

But brackets merge cleanly only if they were shot cleanly. Get the spread wrong and the merge has nothing to work with in the highlights; let the wrong setting drift between frames and the merge produces soft edges or shifting colour. This guide covers what to lock, what to vary, and how wide to go.

Shooting a bracket set

    Put the camera on a tripod

    Hand-held brackets can be aligned in software, but alignment always costs a little edge detail, and vertical lines in architecture are unforgiving. A tripod also lets you use base ISO and a small aperture without worrying about shutter speed.

    Lock everything except shutter speed

    Set aperture, ISO, white balance and focus manually, and do not let them change between frames. Aperture is the important one: if it shifts, depth of field shifts with it and the frames will not merge cleanly.

    Choose your spread

    Three frames two stops apart covers an ordinary room. Add frames — not wider gaps — when a window is much brighter than the interior. See the table below for a starting point.

    Fire the sequence without touching the camera

    Use a two-second timer, a remote, or your camera's app. Pressing the shutter by hand between frames is the most common cause of misaligned brackets.

    Check the two extremes, not the middle

    Your darkest frame should hold the window with nothing clipped; your brightest should show real detail in the darkest corner. If either fails, the merge cannot invent what was never captured — add a frame and reshoot.

How many frames, how many stops

The honest answer is that it depends on the brightness gap between the room and the window, and the only reliable way to judge it is the histogram. But these are sensible starting points, and most interiors fall into the first two rows.

Why you bracket with shutter speed only

Shutter speed is the only exposure control that changes brightness and nothing else. Change aperture and you change depth of field, so the frames disagree about what is sharp. Change ISO and you change the noise floor, so the frames disagree about texture in the shadows. Either one gives the merge contradictory information, and the result is soft edges or mottled shadows.

Most cameras get this right automatically in aperture priority or in their built-in bracketing mode, but it is worth confirming rather than assuming — some bodies will happily vary ISO if auto ISO is left on.

Fix your white balance before you shoot

Auto white balance re-evaluates every frame. In a bracket set that means your darkest frame — dominated by the cool daylight coming through the window — can be rendered several hundred kelvin away from your brightest frame, which is dominated by warm indoor light. The merge then has to reconcile two different colour interpretations of the same room, and the usual symptom is a colour cast that shifts across the image.

Set a fixed Kelvin value or use a preset and leave it there for the whole set. You are shooting RAW, so you can change your mind afterwards — what matters is that every frame in the set agrees.

Mistakes that show up at the merge

  • Auto ISO left on, so the frames disagree about noise
  • Auto white balance, so the frames disagree about colour
  • Too few frames, so the window clips in every exposure and no merge can recover it
  • Wider gaps instead of more frames — a 3-frame ±3 EV set leaves holes a 5-frame ±2 EV set would have filled
  • Something moving in the scene: a ceiling fan, a curtain in a draught, trees through the window
  • Touching the camera between frames instead of using a timer or remote

Frequently asked questions

How many stops should I bracket for interiors?

Two stops between frames suits almost every interior. Rather than widening the gap for a difficult room, add more frames at the same two-stop spacing — three frames for a simple room, five for a room with daylight windows, seven when the sun is on the glass.

Do I need a tripod to bracket?

It is strongly recommended. Software can align hand-held frames, but alignment slightly softens edges, and architectural work lives on crisp vertical lines. A tripod also lets you shoot at base ISO and a small aperture regardless of how long the exposure runs.

Should I use my camera's auto exposure bracketing?

Yes — AEB fires the whole sequence from one shutter press, which is faster and steadier than dialling each exposure by hand. Check that it varies shutter speed rather than aperture or ISO, and that auto ISO and auto white balance are switched off.

Why don't my bracketed frames line up?

Almost always camera movement between frames. Use a two-second timer or a remote so you are not touching the body when it fires, make sure the tripod is on a solid footing, and check that nothing in the scene — a fan, a curtain, foliage outside — moved during the sequence.
